Sailing in Grenada, Carriacou & the Grenadines

Grenada and Carriacou lie towards the South of the Lesser Antilles chain. A little harder to reach, and less developed as a result, these islands boast magnificent beaches, tropical rainforest with waterfalls and great snorkelling. They can usually be combined with a trip to the Grenadines, 30 miles to the north.

Getting There and Away

Grenada has direct international arrivals from Germany and certain airports on the East coast of the US and Canada; bigger international airports with good connections to the US and Canada are in St Martin or Antigua to the North – Martinique or St Lucia if you’re coming from Europe, and Trinidad to the South.  Inter-island connections are frequent, but you may need to have patience with the schedules!

The Sailing

Fantastic inter-island sailing, normally 2 to 4 hour hops before a stop for lunch and a swim.  Nice fast sailing in the Easterly trade winds, although the northbound legs can be close to the wind.  Great for beginner sailors and the more experienced.

The main island of Grenada is rainforest covered hills and they’ve seen little development so there is some great unspoiled rainforest and hikes to waterfalls.  Further to the north, the Carriacou and the Grenadine islands are also beautifully unspoiled and boast white sandy beaches fringed with palms and fantastic underwater life.

Vibe / Ambience

Grenada is truly Caribbean and the capital of St George’s is a bustling, fun place.  The Grenadine islands are a laid back heaven of local rythm and easy personality.

Things to Do & See

Take time to do some hiking and exploring the rainforest in Grenada; swim in a waterfall and search out the monkeys and birdlife.  Turtles nest on the northern beaches and in January/February you might be luck enough to see a giant leatherback laying her eggs on the beach.  Plan to kick back and chill out on the beaches in the Grenadines with a rum cocktail, or snorkel the exquisite reefs.

As we are venturing into Caribbean Central America over 2017-19, we currently have no trips scheduled in Guadeloupe.  Please have a look at our schedule for Belize which also boasts offshore cays, fantastic reefs for snorkelling and access to the rainforest on the mainland coast.
