Sailing in Dominica, Martinique and St Lucia

Getting There and Away

Our sailing holidays in Dominica, Martinique and St Lucia start or finish in either Portsmouth, Dominica or Rodney Bay in the North of St Lucia.  St Lucia’s UVF airport in the south of the island has direct international flights from the USA, Canada and Europe, and Dominica is a short local airline connection away from St Lucia’s SLU airport in the North.  However, the travel between the north and the south of the island is a roller coaster bus or taxi ride which takes a couple of hours through scenic rainforest countryside.

The Sailing

Mostly day sailing with short (3 to 4 hours), inter-island hops in sheltered water; this trip is suitable for complete beginner sailors and the more experienced will enjoy generally easy coastal sailing in the lee of the islands.

Scenery

Each of the islands of Dominica, Martinique and St Lucia are tall and volcanic, with a dramatic coastline of vibrant. rainforest covered hills.  Beaches are tropical dark sand with high palm trees and a lush backdrop, although there are one or two white sand beaches along the way too. The scenery is simply stunning.

Vibe / Ambience

Dominica is our favourite Yacht Ibis destination; it’s less developed than any of the other islands in the Lesser Antilles, with the exception, perhaps of St Vincent.  The people are the friendliest around and the ambience is a lazy Caribbean one.  Martinique, in contrast, is perhaps the most developed of the Antilles, although the coastal towns are pretty and tranquil.  St Lucia has long been a honeymoon favourite and has some large all inclusive resorts.  Outside these, the local ambience is vibrant and energetic, particularly in the bigger communities.

Things to Do & See

This route is a wonder for nature lovers and hikers – the rainforests on Dominica are wonderful, you can hike to waterfalls, swim in the pools, spot hummingbirds and parrots, soak in hot sulphur springs, tube down-river or ride horses on the beach.  The rum factories and beach-side restaurants of Martinique are not to be missed, and the incredible Pitons (twin peaks) in St Lucia are begging to be climbed.
