Wet and Wild January Sailing in Eleuthera

With perhaps some of the worst weather we’ve experienced on an Ibis trip, this was a tough one!  Delayed at the start and with many days overcast or rainy, the dramatic skies, quiet beaches and one perfect beach day helped lift spirits.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/4″][vc_column_text]

7th-8th January 2018

What a wet, windy, and, yes, cold start to our Eleuthera Sailing Holiday in the busy Capital of Nassau.  Bleu Turquoise and Summer Breeze were moored at Yacht Haven Marina, just under the bridges and we had little choice but to hunker down in harbour for the first days.

9th January 2018

As the weather cleared we headed out early for our first day on the water – a 40 mile trip to Hatchet Bay on Eleuthera… a little place we would become quite familiar with!  We made it in just as the sun was setting into a grey sky.

10th January 2018

The next day was pretty much constant rain, and we explored the little village waiting for the weather to clear.  Lunch at the Twin Brothers with the smiliest barman in the Bahamas – and probably the worst pina coladas – helped pass the time; as did exploring the downtrodden surroundings of Hatchet Bay.

11th Jauary 2018

Yet another wet day, but we pulled anchor and hoisted sails for the Looking Glass Bridge.  Anchoring in front of a beautiful beach with picture perfect Airstream mobile home, it was later that we found out the location belonged to Lenny Kravitz!

We escaped Lenny’s walled compound and headed for the ferry dock and took a taxi to the stunning pink sand beach of Harbour Island.  Despite the dramatic grey skies, it was a fun day out.

12th January 2018

We’d anchored near the Looking Glass Bridge and enjoyed a morning sail back down to Hatchet Bay, with continuing rain and overcast skies!

13th January 2018

With yet another rainy day ahead, we lifted anchor once more to explore Gregory Town and do some shopping at the lovely Island Made gift shop there.  Back to Hatchet Bay yet again for the evening!

14th January 2018

Finally a break in the weather, and with some blue skies we beat down the coast for the island capital of Governor’s Harbour.  Their lively Friday night Fish Fry soon had everyone dancing in the street!

15th January 2018

At last!  A picture perfect day dawned with clear blue skies and little wind.  We motored up the coast to the gorgeous Alabaster Bay for some fun swimming, kicking back and playing with the boat toys.  Then it was back to Hatchet Bay for a lovely meal at the best local restaurant.

16th January 2018

Another bright day with 25 knots of wind gave us an amazing downwind sail all the way back to Nassau – surfing down the metre swells at speeds of up to 13 knots!  We reached the dock just after lunchtime as the weather started to turn against us once more…  It was a wet walk down to our final crew meal at the Japanese restaurant![/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]
