Sailing Belize – La Isla Bonita, Turneffe and Lighthouse Atolls

5th to 14th May 2018
Belize boasts the second largest barrier reef in the world and the reef and inshore Cays are a stone’s throw away from the Mainland.  Just a little further away are Turneffe Atoll and Lighthouse Atoll which is home to the famous Blue Hole of Belize.  Little spoiled by way of tourism development the tiny cays and huge reefs are home to abundant wildlife both above and below the waves.  Come and make some footprints on a beach where there are no others.

An Unforgettable Belize Sailing Vacation

Fly into Belize City and meet up with your shipmates at the nearby Cucumber Beach Marina. Our Belize sailing holiday begins close to the capital, Belize City, and from there we sail East to the tiny cays that lie just behind the barrier reef and on to the Atolls just outside in the deep blue Atlantic. Leave your shirt & tie at home and don your shorts and sandals for a perfect holiday of beachcombing and kicking back. We’re assured of some spectacular snorkelling and starlit night-time anchorages.

Fish, including dorado (mahi-mahi), wahoo, blue and white marlin, sailfish, tarpon, barracuda, and bonito are plentiful; we’ll troll our lines and there’s a good chance you’ll be able to land supper!

Our 10 day Belize sailing vacation includes glorious blue water sailing, great home-cooked food, fantastic snorkelling and evenings under the stars. This is a chilled out holiday with lots of stops to enjoy the natural beauty of the islands, the underwater life and the turquoise waters. Beginners are welcome, and sailors looking to gain more experience sailing off the beaten track will enjoy the challenge of reef navigation and shallow water sailing, including practicing specific techniques for sailing in and out of the reef-fringed bays. Single travellers will make firm friends amongst their fellow boat buddies.

Our itinerary takes in all the island highlights with time to enjoy the paradise that is the Belize barrier reef both on and in the turquoise seas.

Sunshine and Warm Seas

Warm sunny weather is practically guaranteed; there are often showers in this part of the world but they never last long, and hey, it’s warm rain! Temperatures in their high 20′s are the norm, and there’s always a cooling breeze on board. The sea is a wonderful shade of blue, and with some of the best fishing in the Caribbean….you’ll have an amazing experience!

Sailing Belize is a new area for Yacht Ibis so anything can happen!  Please bring a spirit of adventure and forgive us if we’re exploring along with you!

Flights

If you prefer not to use a travel agent, Flight Connections is a great starting point to find out about flights into BZE, Belize City International Airport.  This link will help you identify which airlines connect from your nearest airport.  Belize is well served internationally with direct flights from Canada, Europe and the USA.

From here, you can contact the airlines directly, or use a flight search engine like Bravofly or Skyscanner to find alternative routes that may work out cheaper.

Getting to the Boat

The airport at Belize is about a 15 to 20 minute cab ride from the marina at Cucumber Beach, Old Belize.  Please ensure you provide your arrival information as soon as you can and keep us updated of any changes.  Our boats will be in a marina in Cucumber Beach, the exact spot will be notified to guests before they arrive.  Please pack light, and using a lightweight, collapsible bag with wheels if possible.  Hard suitcases may not be brought on board, we simply have no room to store them!

Arriving and Departing

You should aim to arrive around midday on the first day of your trip, and we will aim to finish at midday on the last.  To facilitate travel, we offer a complimentary extra night on board at either the beginning or the end of the trip.  Additional nights can be provided at a cost of USD $95 per person per night on a bed and help yourself continental breakfast basis.  If you’d like to stay for any additional nights please add them to your booking.  We do need the days in between trips to prepare the boats for the following trips, so please keep this in mind, thank you!

Accommodation Nearby

There are a number of accommodation options in Belize City or the nearby waterfront.  Please check Tripadvisor and AirBnB for options.

Choosing a Boat

We will be running Bleu Turquoise for this trip with up to 8 guests; please make your cabin selection on the Booking Form.

Boat Name Cabin Type Price (USD)
Bleu Turquoise Double Cabin with Ensuite for Sole Use (2 available) $2,495

Insurance

You should ensure you have a good travel policy that covers you for flight delays and lost/delayed baggage – this is particularly important if any part of your travel includes a LIAT or Air France flight!  During this sailing holiday we will never be more than 12 miles from shore and coastal sailing like this is usually part of the standard travel cover for most policies; please ensure that your travel policy doesn’t specifically exclude this.

Expenses & Currency

The currency in Belize is the Belizian Dollar which is tied to the USD at 2:1.  US dollars are universally accepted (you will get change in Belize dollars); do make sure you do have a supply of USD; the ATM’s are not as frequent a you might think especially once we leave Belize mainland for the islands!  Credit cards are accepted in most bars and restaurants but not all.

We provide filtered drinking water on board and we carry fruit juices for breakfast time.  You will need to provision with any soft drinks, alcohol and mixers you need when you arrive and there are a number of supermarkets in Belize old town where you can do this.  Guests often club together and have a kitty for these costs, but you may prefer to buy your own.

You should budget for between USD $15 to $35 for a main course in a restaurant when we eat out plus drinks and service charge. The local food and drink is not expensive by Western standards but there’s no doubt that you can pay as much for a bad meal as an excellent one.  We promise to take you only where we’ve had good value for money!

Participation

Unless otherwise stated, sailing holidays with Yacht Ibis are participatory and you should expect to get involved.  We don’t carry passengers!  This will include:

  • Preparing the boat for sailing
  • Hoisting sails, pulling ropes, winching, steering and generally sailing the boat
  • Putting all the ropes away at the end of the day
  • Helping to keep the communal spaces tidy and clear of personal belongings
  • Taking a turn on clearing away dishes after a meal

This is all part of living aboard a sailing boat 🙂
